Scripture Text: 1 Kings 12; 2 Chronicles 10 – 11

Synopsis: After the death of Solomon, the people came to Rehoboam requesting a reduction in their burdens. After a foolish decision, the northern ten tribes of Israel rebelled against Rehoboam and appointed Jeroboam as their king. To solidify the northern kingdom, now known as Israel, Jeroboam developed a new way to worship God.

Questions for Discussion & Study

  1. When the people came to ask for relief from their burdens, with whom did Rehoboam seek counsel? To whom did he listen?

  2. Discussion: Why do you think Rehoboam was so harsh with them?

  3. Why did Judah not fight against Israel to stop the rebellion?

  4. Name at least four things that Jeroboam changed in worship.

  5. What two groups of people came from Israel to live in Judah after the rebellion?

  6. Be ready to identify the locations of the cities mentioned in 2 Chronicles 11:5-10.
