Synopsis: Even during the most wicked times in Israel there were those who served God. Elijah, one of the greatest characters in the Bible, began to prophesy during the reign of Ahab. Although Elijah boldly defended the Lord, he still had personal struggles. This lesson contains the great contest between Elijah and God against Baal and his followers.

Questions for Discussion & Study

  1. Where did Elijah come from? Be able to identify it on a map.

  2. What event caused Elijah to live by the brook Cherith? How did God care for him there?

  3. How did God take care of Elijah in Zarephath? What two things did he do for a widow? Be able to identify Zarephath on a map.

  4. Who was Obadiah? What did he do for the Lord? What had Ahab done to find Elijah?

  5. Whom does Ahab blame for the troubles in Israel? Whom should he blame? Why?

  6. Find Mount Carmel on a map. Describe the event that took place there. Contrast the methods and results of Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
