Synopsis: Amid the wickedness of Israel we find those who will serve God. Elijah, one of the greatest characters in the Bible, declares the message of the Lord beginning in the reign of Ahab. Elijah boldly defends the Lord yet at times we see his personal struggles. In this lesson we see the great contest between Elijah and God with Baal and his followers.

Questions for Discussion & Study

  1. What region did Elijah come from? Be able to identify it on a map.

  2. What event caused Elijah to live by the brook Cherith? How did God take care of him there?

  3. How did God take care of him in Zarephath? What two things did Elijah do for her? Be able to identify Zarephath on a map.

  4. Who was Obadiah? What did he do for the Lord? To what extent did Ahab go to find Elijah?

  5. Who does Ahab blame for the troubles in Israel? Who should he blame? Why?

  6. Find Mount Carmel on a map. Describe the event that took place there. Contrast the methods and results of Elijah and the prophets of Baal.
