I. Setting of Joshua 24:14-28: Israel had conquered much of the Promised Land and divided it among the tribes. Joshua was urging them to complete God’s command to conquer the land and faithfully serve God to receive His promised blessings. READ THE TEXT

II. This reminds me of a similar command to conquer and live faithfully: the Great Commission. After Jesus had proven that He was the promised Messiah, died as a sacrifice for sins, was resurrected and thereby obtained power over death, and rose to the right hand of God the Father, the disciples were to continue His work of conquest in the hearts of men throughout the world.

IV. In Joshua’s final exhortation and Jesus’s great commission, both were about to depart this world and wanted the people of God to remain faithful, finish the work they started, and be courageous in the face of opposition.
