The Resurrections of the Christian

[!NOTE] Primary Scripture Reading: John 11:17-27

I. Story of Lazarus

1. Messengers told Jesus that his friend Lazarus was dying, John 11:1-7
2. Scripture makes point that Jesus loved them likely to explain his actions.
3. Jesus’ delay set up the miracle, v. 11-15.
4. When Jesus came to Bethany, Martha, Lazarus’s sister, approached Jesus with sadness that he wasn’t there to prevent Lazarus’s death but the hope that all was not lost, v. 21-24.
5. Perhaps she remembered his power over death such as raising the young man in Nain
6. She obviously knew his teaching on the resurrection, Luke 11:24
7. Jesus did raise Lazarus from the dead to the amazement of his followers demonstrating his power over death.
8. Within this account Jesus described his power of life in v. 25-27

II. “I am the resurrection and the life”

1. He didn’t say he had the power of resurrection or power over life and death.
2. The nature of resurrection and life was inherent in his being.
3. He is the source of life
4. Physical
5. Spiritual
6. Eternal
7. Death came into the world through sin
8. Physical
9. Spiritual
10. Eternal
11. He is the resurrecting power to restore life when men suffer death
12. Physical/Eternal
13. Acts 2:24: loosed the pains of death
14. Hebrews 2:14-15 – destroy power of Satan over us
15. He will bring a final victory over death at the final resurrection
16. 1 Corinthians 15:24-26 – Final enemy to be destroyed
17. Revelation 21:4 – No more death

C. Baptism is a spiritual burial and resurrection to a new life, Romans 6:1-7
